3 Warning Signs You’re Wearing The Wrong Eyeglasses Prescription

For many patients with refractive errors (eg. nearsightedness and farsightedness), wearing prescription eyeglasses is the most comfortable, affordable, and effective way to achieve clear vision. Whether it’s your first pair, or your tenth, the promise of good vision is always exciting.

Unfortunately, there may be times when your optometrist gets your prescription wrong, so when you do get a new pair of eyeglasses, it’s important to be aware of the following signs:

1. Headaches

Headaches are the most telling sign that you have the wrong prescription in your eyeglasses. The wrong prescription will cause a lot of strain on your eyes, causing them, and your brain, to overwork and leaving a horrible headache that resides primarily above your eyebrows and the front of your head.

If you answer yes to any of the below questions, your headaches may be due to a wrong prescription.

  • Did you begin getting frequent headaches just a few days after you started wearing your prescription?
  • Do the headaches come on gradually?
  • Do the headaches happen when you wear your eyeglasses or contact lenses and then disappear when you take them off?

Note: Because headaches are relatively common, it’s important to make sure that they correlate with you putting on your eyeglasses. If you have any doubts, contact your optometrist and they can help resolve the problem.

2. Vertigo

One of the biggest and most frustrating symptoms of a wrong prescription is vertigo and/or nausea. What is vertigo? Vertigo is the sensation of dizziness or feeling unbalanced while standing or sitting.

This most often occurs when your eyeglasses prescription is too high so if you’ve never had vertigo before, but are suddenly experiencing some symptoms with a new prescription, it’s important to visit your optometrist straight away as you could risk injuring yourself.

Note: Vertigo can be caused by other serious health problems so apart from getting your prescription fixed, you should also have your general physician evaluate your symptoms.

3. Blurred Vision

Is your vision fuzzy and/or blurry even though just new received new eyeglasses? This may or may not indicate that you need to recheck your prescription.

Silver Lining: Blurred vision after receiving a new prescription can often be a sign of your eyes adjusting to your new lenses so if your vision is slightly fuzzy in the first few days, don’t be so quick to call up your optometrist. Give your eyes some time to adjust.

How will you know when to contact your optometrist? Generally, you should contact your eye doctor if:

  • your blurred vision persists for longer than two weeks
  • the blurred vision is accompanied by vertigo or headaches

Remember if you are concerned about your prescription being incorrect, it’s important to contact your optometrist. The last thing you want is for your symptoms to escalate.
