Diabetic retinopathy is an eye condition that affects people with diabetes. This occurs when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of blindness in people under the age of 65.
There is no permanent cure for diabetic retinopathy, however, our Calgary optometrists offer various successful treatments that can prevent or delay vision loss effectively. Contact us today!
Diabetic retinopathy can only be detected through a comprehensive dilated eye exam which includes a visual acuity test, a measure of the pressure in the eye, and pupil dilation. These tests allow our optometrists to look for early signs of the disease.
Patients with diabetes are highly encouraged to schedule a dilated eye exam once a year. Early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of blindness from diabetic retinopathy by 95%.
Diabetic Retinopathy can be treated with several therapies including corticosteroids, focal/grid macular laser surgery, and vitrectomy (the removal of some or all of the vitreous humour from the eye).
If you're scheduled for a diabetic retinal examination, coming prepared to your appointment can help us better take care of your eye care needs.
