Can’t Get Your Teenager To Wear Eyeglasses? Try These Simple Tips

During your child’s latest eye exam, were you told that your teenager needs glasses? Getting used to wearing something new isn’t easy and eyeglasses pose unique challenges. However, by enlisting the help of your optometrist, there are some ways in which you can help your teenager feel more comfortable with this transition:

1. Get Your Teen Involved In the Process

As any optometrist will tell you, if your teenager loves his/her eyeglasses, they’ll be more likely to wear them. Letting your child have a say in which frames are chosen (style, color, material), will make them feel more empowered and excited to wear their spectacles.

2. Make Sure the Fit is Right

One of the most common reasons why your teenager refuses to wear their eyeglasses is that they fit uncomfortably. After you’ve chosen the eyeglasses and before you leave the eye clinic, make sure the optometrist checks:

  • That the eyeglasses aren’t too tight behind the ear
  • Whether the eyeglasses are too loose or keep slipping down your child’s nose
  • That the glasses aren’t grazing your child’s cheeks or eyelashes

Remember: Even if your child loves the spectacles you’ve chosen, they won’t wear the eyeglasses if they don’t fit correctly.

3. Positive Reinforcement is Key

Did your teenager behave well during their latest eye exam? Did they wear their eyeglasses without being told or are trying to look after their spectacles properly? When your child does a good job, it’s important to reward them with something small, be it dinner at their favorite restaurant, a new video game, or an exciting experience.

4. Start Slow

It will take your teenager some time to adjust to their new eyeglasses and prescription, so if they are being reluctant about wearing spectacles, you must remain patient and supportive. You may want to try:

  • Explaining why eyeglasses are important for their health and safety
  • Introducing the new eyeglasses for shorter periods of time
  • Reminding them that other people also wear spectacles, including mom or dad, and even other family or friends

Remember, building positive experiences with your teenager’s new eyeglasses will make them more eager to wear them.
