LASIK eye surgery is an innovative and effective way to correct a myriad of vision problems including farsightedness, nearsightedness, presbyopia, and astigmatism. If your optometrist has determined that this is a safe procedure for you, it can offer many benefits, including:

  • Improved vision
  • Greater convenience when performing daily tasks such as driving or using the computer
  • Improved aesthetic appearance
  • Lower long-term eye care costs
  • Reduced dependency on prescription eyewear or contact lenses

If you have grown tired of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses, our Calgary optometrists offer consultations during which they will review your medical history and perform a thorough eye exam to determine if you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery.

How To Look After Your Eyes Following LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery is an extremely popular method of correcting a number of vision problems including myopia and hyperopia. It is a very quick procedure and during this time, a small incision is made in the cornea and a laser is used to do the necessary reshaping.

Although this is a straight-forward treatment, patients will require some time to properly heal after LASIK eye surgery to prevent any infection or damage.

Here are some tips to help you take care of your eyes following the treatment:

  1. Wear protective goggles for the first few nights. Following your procedure, you may be given goggles or eye shields before being discharged. For the first few nights, make sure to wear these to avoid touching or bumping your eyes as you sleep.

  2. Do not rub your eyes. It is very important that you do not rub your eyes after your surgery, especially in the first week. Doing so could dislodge the flap and increase your risk of post-operative complications. If your eyes are feeling itchy, talk to your optometrist. He/she can prescribe eye drops to eliminate any discomfort.

  3. Avoid straining your eyes. For the first couple of days after the treatment, avoid straining your eyes. This means limiting the time spent reading, watching TV, playing video games, or using your smartphone and laptop.

  4. Don’t wear makeup for at least one week. You want to avoid irritating your eyes as much as possible following LASIK eye surgery. That’s why it’s best to wait for at least seven days before wearing makeup again. Particles from your eyeliner or eyeshadow can easily get into your eyes and cause discomfort or even increase your risk of infection.

  5. Wear sunglasses. You will find that your eyes become more sensitive to light following the surgery. When you are outdoors, make sure to wear a high-quality pair of sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays. This will help lessen the glare and any sensitivity, and it will also protect your eyes from any wind, debris, or dust particles.

  6. Avoid contact sports, swimming, and hot tubs. While you can typically start exercising a week after your LASIK surgery, you should avoid contact sports for at least one month. In addition to this, it is highly recommended that you avoid any swimming pools or hot tubs for at least two weeks to avoid any potential infections.

  1. How long does it take to recover from LASIK eye surgery? The recovery period will vary from patient to patient and depends on several factors. However, most people will be able to see clearly within 24 hours following the surgery. If you follow the post-op instructions laid out by your doctor, your healing time should be relatively quick.

  2. How long does the surgery take? The actual procedure itself is very quick and can take up to 10 minutes per eye. Between preparing for your treatment, undergoing the procedure, and aftercare, it can take up to two hours in the clinic.

  3. Are the results of laser eye surgery permanent? Yes. After the healing process is complete, your vision will remain stable. It’s important to keep in mind that some patients might develop the need for reading glasses as they get older.
