My Eye Hurts! Is It Time To See an Emergency Eye Doctor?

The general rule is that you should consider any eye pain as an emergency. Almost always, the right course of action is to immediately schedule an appointment with your emergency eye doctor.

Why? Only a professional and qualified eye doctor can determine the exact cause of your discomfort and prescribe the right treatment to prevent any damage to your eye and possible permanent vision loss.

In particular, you should ALWAYS see your eye doctor straight away if you have a painful eye and:

  • The pain started immediately after an activity that could have caused a foreign body injury, especially if you weren’t wearing protective eyewear.
  • Your pain is due to an eye injury.
  • The pain is extremely severe and it is accompanied by blurred vision, vision loss, or sensitivity to light.
  • You have recently had eye surgery, such as cataract surgery or laser eye surgery.
  • You notice that you have redness and discharge from your eye.
  • You have a history of glaucoma, your pain is severe, and it came on suddenly. This could signal an acute attack of a less common type of glaucoma (angle-closure glaucoma) which could lead to rapid vision loss. This is a medical emergency.

Remember: When it comes to eye pain, it never pays to take chances. You should always visit your emergency eye doctor as soon as possible so they can determine the exact cause of the pain and ensure you receive the right treatment.

What You Should NEVER Do When You Have an Eye Emergency

Some very serious complications can result from an eye injury, so you should never attempt to treat it yourself. Although you may be tempted to do something, make sure you NEVER:

  • Rub or apply pressure to the affected eye
  • Try to remove any foreign objects that may have gotten into your eye
  • Use tweezers or any other tools in your eye
  • Put any medications or ointments in your eye

If you wear contact lenses, you shouldn’t try to remove them. This could make your injury worse. The only exception to this rule is if chemicals splashed into your eyes and you are unable to flush it out from your lenses with water. However, in all cases, it is best to call or visit your eye doctor.
