How does diabetes affect the eye?

Diabetes can cause complications to the eye such as altering nearsightedness and farsightedness vision problem, premature presbyopia, cataract, glaucoma and paralysis the nerves that control the eye muscles or pupils. The most common and severe eye problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy.

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in the retina change, resulting in vessel swelling and blood leakage. If the problem left untreated, it could lead to blindness.

Can diabetic retinopathy be treated?

Detecting diabetic retinopathy early is the key to a successful treatment. Diabetic retinopathy can be diagnosed with eye examinations and treated with intraocular injections or laser therapy. Retinal surgery may also be necessary for some cases.
