If you had to give up one of your five senses, which one would it be? According to a recent survey, 80% of people said they would rather give up any other sense over their vision. At Market Mall Optometry, we feel that it is imperative that everyone in Calgary has regular eye check ups to ensure their vision is healthy and to prevent diseases.
Recently, an American documentary filmmaker was told that his eye disease would compromise his vision so he decided to make a movie about people suffering from similar conditions and how they cope.
One of the participants was a young woman, 32, who unfortunately lost her sight due to diabetic retinopathy. This condition is caused by Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Another participant was declared legally blind because of her glaucoma. Glaucoma is indicative of optic nerve damage and over time progresses into vision loss. One participant was battling macular degeneration, which is a disorder that is typically age related and dulls your overall vision. Lastly, a young man was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, which lead to his blindness by the age of 40. Retinitis pigmentosa is an incurable eye disease that is reflective of retina damage.
The president of a vision loss prevention organization stated that as the population ages, approximately 60 million Americans will be at high risk of vision loss. This is a shocking figure especially considering that many people skip optometry appointments. Early detection of eye disorders and diseases can lessen the severity of issues and, at times, prevent them entirely. At Market Mall Optometry in Calgary, we recommend that all children have an eye check up before they enter school. Then, we recommend that you maintain regular check ups. You certainly don’t want to wait until an eye issue surfaces and it’s too late to treat. Being proactive with your health can prevent disorders or least keep diseases at bay.
