Between constantly checking our smartphones, staring at computer monitors at work and watching movies on flat screen televisions, it's safe to say our eyes are working overtime. The modern technology that we can’t live without is putting a high degree of stress on our eyes.
Staring at computer monitor and smartphone screens will not cause permanent vision damage, but these devices are placing a lot of stress on your eyes.
Symptoms of digital eye strain can include the following:
- Red eyes
- Dry eyes
- Blurry vision
- Fatigue
- Headaches
Here are a few tips tho help put minimal stress on your eyes:
1. Practice the 20-20-20 rule. If you do stare at a computer screen for work, every 20 minutes, try to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
2. Practice the "high-five" rule. Many people have their computer screens placed too close to their eyes. As a general rule, have your computer monitor far enough away that you can give it a proper "high-five".
3. Have the correct computer monitor position. Your computer monitor should be positioned directly in front of your face with no tilt and should be eye level or just below. Have the overhead lighting dim and your monitor should be the brightest light in your area. We also recommend investing in anti-glare screens or glasses to reduce strain on your eyes.
4. Enlarge font size. Staring at screens doesn’t stop at the office; in fact, a majority of people are staring at their smartphones longer than any other screen. When it comes to smartphones, make sure the font sizes are enlarged to increase comfort for your eyes. At night, try not to have the screen at its brightest setting and always hold the device at a comfortable distance from your eyes.
