Your Guide to Wearing Contact Lenses During COVID-19

Are you wondering about wearing contact lenses during COVID-19? Contact lenses can be worn safely while preventing potential infection by following proper lens care, including thoroughly washing, cleaning, and drying your hands prior to handling your contact lenses.

When it comes to correcting your vision, contact lenses offer a convenient and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional eyeglasses. In fact, eye doctors recommend them to patients of all ages due to their numerous benefits, which include:

  • Greater visual clarity
  • A more natural look
  • Better peripheral vision
  • Less visual distortions
  • A better/wider field of vision

Contact Lens Wear and Coronavirus Guidance

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, patients are looking to their eye doctor for accurate eye health and vision guidance, and when it comes to contact lens wear, we would like to reinforce that contact lenses are a safe and effective form of vision correction for millions of people around the world.

Can Wearing Contact Lenses Increase My Risk of COVID-19?

There is no evidence to suggest that contact lens wearers are more at risk of acquiring COVID-19 than eyeglass wearers. People who are healthy can continue to wear and care for their lenses as prescribed by their eye doctor and should always follow the proper lens instructions.

Is it Safer to Wear Eyeglasses than Contact Lenses During COVID-19?

While it is possible to get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching your own mouth, nose, or eyes, this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Thus, contact lenses can be safely worn while preventing possible contamination by following the right contact lens care instructions, as prescribed by your eye doctor. This includes thoroughly washing, cleaning, and drying your hands before handling your lenses.

Note: Glasses are not proven to offer protection. There is no scientific evidence that wearing eyeglasses protects against COVID-19 or other viral transmissions.

Tips For Safe Contact Lens Wear During COVID-19

  1. Exercise Proper Hand Washing: When using contact lenses, or spectacles, you should wash your hands carefully and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, followed by drying hands on unused paper towels. This should happen before you insert your lenses. If water is not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  2. Disinfect Your Contact Lenses: Contact lens wearers should either dispose of their daily disposable lenses each evening, or regularly disinfect their monthly or two-week lenses according to your eye doctor’s instructions.
  3. Discontinue Contact Lens Wear if You’re Sick. Consistent with recommendations for other types of illnesses, if you feel ill with cold or flu-like symptoms, you should stop wearing your contact lenses.
