3 Tips For Looking After Your Eyeglasses

Have you just purchased a new pair of eyeglasses? Here are a few tips on how to look after this big investment and ensure your spectacles stay in good condition for many years.

For both adults and children, annual eye exams are a very important part of one’s general health maintenance and assessment. This is because regular visits to your local optometrist will ensure that they can check for:

  • any change in the prescription of your eyeglasses
  • any symptoms of sight-threatening eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma.
  • any general health conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure, or autoimmune diseases

3 Simple and Easy Tips to Care For Your Eyeglasses

You invest a lot of time and money when looking for the right pair of eyeglasses. You have to search for the right frame, shape, pattern, and color, so that the spectacles you wear are comfortable, functional, and perfectly express you.

Don’t you want to do everything possible to ensure these eyeglasses are taken care of? Follow these 3 simple tips on how to care for your new spectacles.

1. Clean Them Properly

One of the best ways to ensure that you take good care of your eyeglasses is by cleaning them properly. Failing to do so can result in scratched lenses and less than optimum vision. Some of the things you need to keep in mind include:

  • Always rinse your eyeglasses off with water before wiping or cleaning them. Even tiny particles of dust can settle on your lens, and if they’re wiped on a dry lens, there’s a chance they may become scratched.

  • Use the right cloth. NEVER use paper towels, tissues, napkins, or your clothes to dry your lenses. All of these materials have textured surfaces that can easily scratch your lenses.

  • Air dry them. If you can, allow your glasses to air dry. If you can’t, make sure to wipe them with a soft, clean, and lint-free cloth.

  • Spray carefully. There are some sprays that are specifically made to clean eyeglass lenses. NEVER use household cleaners such as windex because these contain ammonia, which can tear off the coating of your lens.

What To Avoid With Eyeglasses

2. Store Them Correctly

When you’re not wearing your eyeglasses, you must store them. Not only will this keep dust and dirt away from your lenses, but it also protects your spectacles from getting scratched, bent, or broken.

Don’t want a big and bulky case? You can always opt for a microfibre pouch which is great to keep at your office desk or on your night stand for glasses you don’t always wear such as reading spectacles.

Tip: Don’t lay your eyeglasses facedown. This will definitely lead to some scratches and damage, compromising the comfort of your vision.

3. Take Them On and Off Correctly

When you first receive your eyeglasses, you should ask your optometrist to teach you how to put them on and take them off correctly. This is important because doing this incorrectly can lead to bent eyeglasses, which are more likely to feel uncomfortable and negatively impact your vision.

What you should do: Always use both hands or grip the piece that crosses the bridge when taking them off.
