5 Ways You Risk Damaging Your Eyeglasses Without Knowing It

For people who have problems seeing, eyeglasses are one of the most effective and comfortable vision correction solutions - and they can be a great fashion statement too!

However, to keep them in excellent shape, it’s important to take good care of them so that they last you for many years.

Here are five surprising ways you may be damaging your eyeglasses:

1. You Remove Them Using One Hand

Putting on and taking off your glasses improperly can cause the earpieces to go crooked, or even cause them to fall to the floor and break. That’s why you should ALWAYS use both hands to put on and take them off.

REMEMBER: If you remove your spectacles with just one hand, it puts pressure on the hinge of the other side and over time, cause them to bend and not fit properly.

2. You Exercise With Your Glasses On

Of course, you still need to see clearly when you’re playing sports or are out on a run, but wearing your glasses during these activities can injure your eyes, damage your eyeglasses, or cause a serious eye emergency.

Instead, when playing sports, you may want to consider:

Investing in protective sports eyewear. Protective sports eyewear is made from a unique material that is specially designed to protect your vision and eyes during any type of physical activity.

Wearing contact lenses. Aside from no longer having to worry about broken eyeglasses when playing sports, contact lenses offer many other benefits of active individuals, such as:

  • a wider field of view;
  • better peripheral vision;
  • fewer vision distortions and obstructions;
  • UV protection to keep your eyes safe from the sun.

3. You Don't Use Your Glasses Case

A  case for your spectacles is a MUST for all eyeglasses wearers. Leaving your glasses around the house, unprotected, can lead to a host of problems, including:

Storing your glasses back in a case is always a safe bet, but if you must leave them outside, it’s always best to put the eyeglasses down with the lenses FACING UP to avoid any damage.

4. You Leave Your Glasses On Top Of Your Head

Although you may think putting your eyeglasses on top of your head is convenient or looks stylish, this is a big NO-NO for all of our Calgary eyeglasses-wearing patients. This is because doing so can lead to:

  • scratched lenses;
  • broken temples or frames;
  • the natural oils on your scalp smudging the lenses;
  • misplaced eyeglasses.

Placing your glasses on your head can also stretch out the earpieces so your eyeglasses won’t fit as well, or put your spectacles at risk of falling and becoming damaged.

Other places you shouldn’t keep your eyeglasses are on your dashboard, bed, floor, or shower shelf.

5. You Use Your Clothes To Clean Your Lenses

While it’s true that a smudge on your glasses can be VERY annoying, it’s important to refrain from wiping it away with your scarf or t-shirt. REMEMBER: The fibres in clothing can scratch your lenses, so it’s important to make sure to ALWAYS clean your lenses the right way.

How to clean your eyeglasses:

  • make sure your hands are free from dirt, grime, lotion, or anything else that could be transferred to your lenses.
  • rinse your eyeglasses under a gentle stream of lukewarm water, to remove dust or debris. AVOID hot water which can damage some lens coatings.
  • apply a small drop of dishwashing soap onto each lens, but make sure it’s brands that don’t include hand moisturizers or lotions.
  • gently rub both sides of the lenses and the frames for a few seconds, including the nose pads and the ends of the temples.
  • lightly shake the eyeglasses to remove most of the water from the frames.
  • dry the lenses and frames with a lint-free towel, making sure it’s free of any dirt or debris.
