Am I a Good Candidate For Laser Eye Surgery?
Before undergoing laser eye surgery, you must first book a consultation to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. During this consultation, you will be educated about the risks and benefits of the procedure, and what affects your candidacy.
In general, candidates for laser eye surgery should meet the following criteria:
1. Age: To be eligible for this treatment, you must be at least 18 years old.
2. Good General Health: To ensure that you enjoy safe results, you must be in good general health before undergoing this procedure. Patients who have certain health problems such as uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune diseases, or a compromised immune system are not good candidates for this procedure.
3. Free of Eye Diseases: To undergo this surgery, you cannot have eye diseases such as keratoconus, glaucoma, cataracts, corneal disease and certain types of optic nerve diseases.
4. No Eye Injuries: If you have suffered from an eye injury or have an eye infection, then laser surgery is not right for you.
5. Not Nursing or Pregnant: Candidates should not be pregnant or nursing when undergoing laser eye surgery. This is because hormones can affect the stability of your prescription and can affect the quality of your results.
6. No Dry Eyes: If you continuously suffer from dry eyes, then laser eye surgery is not often recommended.
7. Stable Vision: For at least one year before your procedure, you must have stable vision.
8. Contact Lenses: Before your laser eye surgery, you cannot wear your contact lenses for a certain amount of time. This length of time will be determined by your eye doctor and is done so on an individual basis. Why? This ensures corneal stability and an accurate assessment of your prescription before the procedure.
9. Minimal Corneal Thickness: The thickness of your cornea plays a key role in determining if you’re a good candidate for laser eye surgery. Due to the nature of the procedure, candidates must have a corneal thickness of approximately 0.5mm.
Remember: Before your laser eye surgery, your optometrist can help you understand what to realistically expect after the procedure given your specific circumstances and prescription. You must remember that scheduling a consultation doesn’t mean you’re obligated to move forward with the treatment.
