How To Look After Your Eyes During a Vacation
As winter draws nearer, many Calgarians are thinking about traveling and vacations. Unfortunately, in the midst of booking tickets, choosing lodging and planning an itinerary, the majority of people neglect to take proper steps to ensure their eye health.
For those who wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, taking care of your vision during a holiday is very important. There is nothing worse than an eye problem dampening the excitement of a trip.
To help you avoid such issues, here are 5 tips for looking after your eyes when you’re on holiday:
1. Take Your Prescription With You
Carrying your eyeglasses prescription is a big pre-planning step that many travelers forget. However, it’s important because it means you’ll always be one-step ahead of the game if you lose/break your eyeglasses or contact lenses.
In addition to carrying your prescription, here are some other tips to follow in order to avoid any mishaps:
- Wear an eyeglasses chain
- Always have a spare pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses handy
- Put them away properly (eg. in your pocket, purse or car glove compartment)
2. Look After Your Contact Lenses Properly
As a contact-lens wearer, it’s very important to plan ahead of a vacation, to ensure you have everything you need to take care of your eyes properly. Some things to talk to your eye doctor about include:
- Travel size contact lens solutions & storage cases
- Daily disposable contact lenses
- Well-fitting goggles (if you are planning on swimming in your contact lenses)
- Contact lenses with UV protection
- Dry eye care tips to keep your vision comfortable and clear throughout your holiday

3. Stay Hydrated
Remember to drink enough water to keep your eyes properly hydrated throughout your trip. This is true even for those who use eye drops or contact lens solution. Try to consume at least 8-10 glasses of water PER DAY.
This dry eye care tip is extremely important because failing to stay hydrated will lead to:
- Blurry vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Eye redness
- Vision pain or discomfort
- Itchiness
4. Wear Sunglasses
If you are planning on spending a lot of time outdoors during your vacation, whether it’s on the beach or on the slopes, it’s important to carry a pair of sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection.
Sunglasses will:
- Protect your eyes from harmful UV light which can cause eye conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma.
- Prevent photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye.) Although this can heal within 48 hours, it is painful and results in blurred vision and light sensitivity.
- Lower your risk of developing abnormal growth tissue, which can lead to inflammation or disturbance of vision.
