4 Signs Your Child's Prescription Has Changed

Small changes in your child's vision can often go unnoticed, but that doesn't mean they should be ignored. Here are 4 signs that may indicate it's time for a kid's eye exam.

Last year, your child had an eye exam and you purchased a brand new pair of glasses in his/her prescription. All was going well but now, your child is struggling to see again. So what’s going on?

Since our eyes grow and change along with our bodies, vision changes do occur naturally. However, it’s crucial that you visit a professional eye doctor to determine whether or not your child’s prescription needs an upgrade.

Regular eye exams for children are important because they:

  • Allow your child to perform better at school activities
  • Ensure normal vision development
  • Detect and prevent progression of vision issues
  • Help maintain your child’s comfortable and clear vision

At Market Mall Optometry, we offer a wide range of children’s vision services including eye exams, contact lenses and spectacles to help keep your little one’s eyesight healthy and comfortable for many years to come.

Is it time for your child’s regular eye exam?

4 Signs It’s Time to Schedule a Kid’s Eye Exam

For children over the age of 6 years old, it is recommended that they visit an eye doctor at least once a year. However, during this time it is possible for your child’s prescription to change.

Here are 4 warning signs of vision change which may indicate a children’s eye exam is necessary:

1. Frequent headaches

If your child’s prescription is not right, then their eyes will be working harder than they should. You may notice that they complain of headaches frequently, especially after reading a book, staring at a computer or looking at the blackboard.

2. Squinting

If your child is constantly squinting to see the class board or television better, then it may be that their vision is not as clear as it should be. While squinting could compensate for a slightly off prescription, it may lead to headaches as your child’s eyesight gets worse.

3. Eye rubbing

It’s very normal for children to rub their eyes when they’re tired or sleepy. But if your child is rubbing their eyes when they’re trying to focus on something (e.g. reading a book or watching television), this could be a sign that their eyesight isn’t up to par.

4. Old Glasses

If your child has had the same pair of glasses for over several years, it’s probably time for a new prescription and eyeglasses! A kid’s eye exam allows your eye doctor to detect any changes in vision and make the necessary adjustments to your child’s prescription.

If it has been a while since your child has been for an eye exam, make sure you schedule an appointment for a quick checkup - especially if you’ve noticed other signs of their vision changing.

Children & Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a great alternative to traditional eyeglasses for correcting vision problems, particularly for more active children.

Through a comprehensive contact lens fitting, our eye doctors can help determine whether or not contact lenses are the right choice for your child & can best advise on how to look after them to ensure your kid’s vision stays clear and healthy.
